A MUCH-TRAVELLED COVER
This cover was posted in Troon at 7.45 pm on 15 August 1910 and
arrived in Dublin the following morning:
As the addressee could not be traced, "Not for'' was written before
"Dublin'' and "Tre win Uchaf, Anglesey'' added before being forwarded
to Bangor, where it arrived by the night mail boat to Holyhead on the 17th,
as indicated by the dated double-arc on the reverse side.
Tre win Uchaf was thought to be in Llanerchymedd so the letter was then sent there via
Amlwch. But Miss Weatherall could not be found there either so it was
returned to Bangor on the 18th where a sorter stamped the front with the
instructional mark 'Not to be found / 47'. It would then have been sent to
the Dead Letter Office in London.
This example typifies the efficiency of the Edwardian Post Once, when
it took great pride in making every effort to deliver mail to its rightful
address. Those were the days!
